Somaliland Faculty Support Trips - Call for Volunteers!

Following a successful trip in November 2013, the King’s THET Somaliland Partnership (KTSP) is looking to recruit volunteers for 2 upcoming trips. The trips will support two of our partner university faculties in Hargeisa and Amoud around developing their teaching skills and, particularly, preparations for their student examinations this summer.  Amoud University teaches medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, public health and laboratory sciences while Hargeisa just has a medicine faculty. Please read through the outlines below and get in touch if you are interested in volunteering for either/both of the trips. You can find more information about KTSP here. For more detailed terms of reference for the April trip, please email katharine.1.harris@kcl.ac.uk

Faculty Support Trip – April 2014

Aims

The primary aims of the trip would be to deliver workshops with a focus on preparing for the exams in 2014, to conduct faculty-specific teaching observations, and provide one-to-one support for teaching teams within faculties. I have attached the draft Terms of Reference for this trip which can provide some context and further detail of planned activities.

Dates

We would like to have 2 x 2 week trips in April. Any volunteers who are able and would like to volunteer for the whole 4 weeks would also be welcome. Exact dates will be determined based on your availability.

Who we are looking for

We are looking to recruit 8 volunteers across the following:

  • Educationalists
  • Medical
  • Nursing
  • Midwifery
  • Dentistry
  • Public health
  • Pharmacy

We are looking for volunteers with experience of training health professionals in your respective fields. Ideal candidates will also have prior experience of Somaliland and/or examining. However, as we are hoping to recruit a larger group, and from a wider range of professions than previously, we would welcome expressions of interest from anyone with a strong interest in and experience of health professionals education.

How to volunteer

If you would like to volunteer for this trip please email Susie Whitwell (susie.whitwell@gmail.com) and Katharine Harris (katharine.1.harris@kcl.ac.uk) with an expression of interest, your CV and your anticipated availability in April by February 12th.

External Examining Trip(s) – Summer 2014

Aims

Each year KTSP sends external examiners to assist with the final year examinations in Medicine at the University of Hargeisa and Amoud University, and in nursing at Amoud University. The purpose of the trips is to ensure high standards of assessment and to build on previous work to support the faculties at partner institutions to prepare rigorous and fair examinations for their students.

This year, Amoud University will hold its first final exams for students in the Pharmacy and Dental Schools, and we would like to explore how we can support this process.

Dates

We are waiting for confirmation on the dates of the final year examinations, though we expect them to be in late June/early July. Examining trips are usually for 2 weeks (possibly shorter for dental and pharmacy examinations).

Who we are looking for:

We are likely to need volunteers to be examiners in medicine (5 specialties), nursing (inc. a mental health nurse, and a midwife) pharmacy and dentistry. Experience required will be similar to the April trip above, although it would be very helpful to have previous examining experience.

How to volunteer

If you would like to volunteer for this trip please email Susie Whitwell (susie.whitwell@gmail.com) and Katharine Harris (katharine.1.harris@kcl.ac.uk) an expression of interest with your CV and an idea of your anticipated availability in June/July. We will update you as and when we get any further information concerning the dates of the exams.
