Diversity & Inclusion
Diversity is crucial for enabling world leading teaching and research. Working alongside people with different experiences and perspectives encourages innovation and creativity. It brings exposure to a breadth of knowledge, working styles and techniques and it prompts us to develop ideas and consider decisions from multiple points of view.
We are committed to embedding inclusivity within the culture of our Department as it is essential that all staff and students have a supportive learning and working environment. Our committment to diversity and inclusion is mirrored in King's Strategic Vision for 2029.
The Department of Chemistry is proud of the achievements it has made since its reopening in 2012, for example: in 2016 - 2017 the Department of Chemistry had achieved gender parity among its academic, research and teaching staff and the proportion of female students on undergraduate degrees was approximately 60%, compared to a UK benchmark value of approximately 43%. The Department has also been very supportive of female staff applying for internal promotions, has links to the parents and carers' network and has a new community for postdocs to help them with career development.
Our Department Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee oversees all of our activities, including the impementation of our Athena Swan action plan, and feeds into the Faculty Equality and Diversity Committee.
