Experiment at home

During the COVID-19 pandemic, two experiments were designed by Dr Filip Sebest, in collaboration with Dr Helen Coulshed and Dr Grace Walden, which students can do at home. These experiments are designed to make use of common kitchen equipment to safely recreate a version of the experiments that students would have experienced had they been able to attend our Open Access labs. For each experiment we have given a list of materials and equipment; however if these are not something you can access, we strongly encourage you to use any materials you have available that you think would work! We would love to know what materials you end up using and how you think they affected the experiment!

The experiments are 'caffeine separation from coffee” and 'TLC analysis of food colourings'; these experiments let students explore the principles of separation science.

Out the Box Thinking: PyMol experiment

To highlight the collaborative nature of chemistry and get students excited about where a chemistry degree can take them, we will be releasing a series of ‘lab in a box’ experiments based on research happening in our department as part of our #outtheboxthinking project.

Our first experiment is entirely online and can be done at home using open source software. The experiment delves into the career of a computational chemist and how they can predict interactions with small drug molecules and proteins. This experiment is based on the ground-breaking research being carried out in the King’s Chemistry Department on COVID-19.

Please make sure you complete our pre- and post- experiment questionnaires so we can assess the success of our project!
