The Department of Spanish, Portuguese & Latin American Studies is an open and welcoming department in the heart of cosmopolitan London, where learning opportunities extend beyond the classroom to a whole range of cultural and social events.
We have been teaching Spanish at King’s since 1831 and were pioneers in teaching Portuguese in the UK in the 1860s, giving us unrivalled learning resources.
More recently, we began teaching Catalan also. As a department, we continue to innovate through our leading role in Language Acts and Worldmaking, a flagship project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, aiming to regenerate and transform modern language learning in the UK.
We are a vibrant department
Ours is a vibrant department where, alongside perfecting their language skills with native language tutors, students choose from a wide range of modules. Our staff teach on subjects relating to Spain, Portugal, Spanish America, Lusophone Africa and Brazil, and visitors from across the Iberian worlds frequently visit and interact with students. Our offering spans the medieval period to the present day, including modules on literature, theatre, cinema and the visual arts; on linguistics, history and politics—all taught by recognised experts in the field.
