7 ways to make the most of your day on campus

Ameera Vawda & Sami Yousefi

07 September 2021

Once all the Welcome events and inductions of your first few weeks have finished, you may find that you aren’t busy all the time. Whether it’s between classes or after a day of lectures, you may have some spare time to spend on campus. But what is there to do?

Luckily, there are lots of activities on and around campus to occupy your spare time. We’ve collected our favourite things to do when we’re not in class.

1. Plan your day

It may be useful to spend some time (maybe on your commute) thinking about what you’d like to spend your day doing. Do you have any assignments due? Are you craving something special for lunch? Planning your priorities for the day will make it easier to establish how you can make the most of your time.

2. Join a student society or a sports class

Societies run events throughout term time, so have a look at what’s running on your clearer days.

After a long lecture or commute, why not energise yourself by going to a session by King’s Sport or join one of the many KCLSU sports clubs.

King’s Sport

The importance of keeping fit and healthy is undisputed, so you may want to utilise your time to get in a workout. King’s Sports have gyms near Strand, Waterloo and Guy’s campuses. They also have different group classes, so make sure to check them out!

3. Meet new people

Whether you like to go to big socials and parties or prefer to meet people more organically and in smaller gatherings, there are many places around campus to socialise.

You can go to a society event or just relax in the department common room and meet people from your course. We found that sitting in communal spaces such as cafes and common rooms is another great way to meet people, without having to go to a specific event.

4. Study

We’ve found that if we’re spending the day on campus, setting aside at least an hour catching up on reading and essays is really helpful. There are so many options for study spaces such as libraries, computer rooms and common rooms.

Hit the books

If you want to catch up on some work or get ahead on your studies then the library can be the best place to go. There is one on each campus and they have a variety of group working spaces, study spaces and silent spaces. There are also computers available to use and all-important printers as well!

5. Meet a friend or grab a bite to eat

Treat yourself to a meal in one of the many great food places around London. It could also be a nice opportunity to catch up with friends in between your lectures.

Grab a bite to eat

If you fancy having a bite, there are a whole range of places you can go on campus. There are King’s food restaurants and cafes, KCLSU cafes and KCLSU bars that all serve food during the day. There are also vending machines around campus if you are looking for a quick snack.

6.Find somewhere to relax

All campuses have seating areas available where you can sit, relax and talk to your friends. These are mostly located in the communal areas as you enter the campus buildings, but there are a few more hidden ones as well.

One of our favourites has to be KCLSU’s ‘The Meadow’ space located on the 8th floor of Bush House in the South East Wing. It’s got beanbags, lounge chairs and a pretty impressive view of London. Go and see for yourself!

7. Soak up some culture

Did you know there are museums and galleries on and around our campuses? For example, Guy’s Campus houses the Museum of Life Sciences and the Old Operating Theatre. And Strand has The Arcade, Bush and House Somerset House, both of which run excellent programmes of events, installations and exhibitions.
