In memory of Aalia Mahomed

Blossom tree and Plaque for Aalia

On the 18 March 2025, the King’s community was deeply shaken by the tragic accident on the Strand which resulted in the loss of life of one of our students, Aalia Mahomed.

Aalia was in the second year of study for her BSc in Physics & Philosophy, jointly taught by the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences and Faculty of Arts & Humanities.

Aalia was a treasured member of the King’s community - as shown by the hundreds of students and staff who gathered at her vigil, and the many tributes, flowers and messages of remembrance placed along the Strand. Aalia’s decision to study both Physics and Philosophy reflected her spirit of discovery and a willingness to push boundaries.

Aalia’s life, her memory and her place within the King’s community has been honoured at both the Philosophy and Physics graduation ceremonies. Aalia’s family and friends were at the NMES graduation ceremony held on Thursday 31 July to receive her posthumous degree awarded in her memory.

Following the graduation ceremony Aalia’s family and friends gathered at the cherry blossom tree planted on the Strand to unveil a plaque in her memory. The beautiful wording chosen by Aalia’s family reads:

In loving memory of our forever shining star, Aalia Mahomed. A beloved daughter, sister, philosopher, physicist and friend.– Words chosen by Aalia's family

The cherry blossom tree and plaque will stand as reminder to us all to ‘Be More Aalia’.
