A new photography exhibition has opened at King’s exploring the ancient textile traditions and contemporary creative expression of craftspeople and fashion designers from across Nigeria.

‘Intertwined: Fashion, Textile and Heritage in Nigeria’, at the Arcade in Bush House, showcases the work of award-winning photographer and King’s MA Arts & Cultural Management student Bayo Omoboriowo, and brings together contemporary personal stories, cultural celebrations and global economic realities.

The exhibition is open until Friday 11 March and forms part of King’s annual Africa Week programme. Hosted by the African Leadership Centre and Africa research group, Africa Week brings together academics, researchers and students from across King's. It offers the opportunity to hear from African scholars, leaders, and thinkers, as well as the chance to highlight King's collaboration with African universities and partners.

About the artist

Passionate about education and creative empowerment, Bayo is the founder of Unabashed Africa, a platform that upskills and creates opportunities for photographers across Africa. He is also currently the Chief Official Photographer to the Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari GCFR, a position he has held since May 2015. Meet Bayo and hear more about his creative work on Wednesday 9 March in the exhibition space.

Bayo collaborated with King's researchers on the project, namely Dr Roberta Comunian and Dr Lauren England (Department of Culture, Media and Creative Industries), Dr Eka Ikpe (African Leadership Centre) and Dr Ananya Kabir (Department of English). In 2019, the research team were awarded a King’s Together Seed Fund grant for the Africa Fashion Futures project which provides some of the academic content and enquiry explored within the exhibition.
