Postgraduate study

The Department of Forensic & Analytical Science offers the following programmes of study at postgraduate level:

Forensic Science MSc/MRes

The Forensic Science MSc provides training in the application of science for the investigation of crime and is fully accredited by the Forensic Science Society ( www.forensic-science-society.org.uk ).

King’s Department of Forensic Science & Drug Monitoring has established collaborations with the Metropolitan Police Forensic Services Directorate and other organisations which provide placements for the research project component of the programme.

The taught modules are led by King’s academic staff together with forensic practitioners employed in operational laboratories. The research/casework project of up to 16 weeks is spent in forensic science, forensic toxicology, university research or paternity testing laboratories.

Graduates of the programme go on to work in the forensic science sector; some have taken employment with the Metropolitan Police or crime scene departments of other police forces. Others have gone on to further postgraduate study.

Analytical Science for Industry MSc

The Analytical Science for Industry MSc is designed for chemistry graduates looking to enhance their skills, enabling them to pursue scientific careers in the pharmaceutical, environmental, biomedical or chemical industries, or for those planning to undertake a research degree before entering these industries.

The programme has been developed in collaboration with industry partners to meet the needs of analytical laboratories for instrumental chemical analysis, and to develop the problem-solving skills required at senior levels in industry.

Students are taught in King’s Department of Forensic Science and Drug Monitoring by experts in research methods in analytical science, and gain hands-on experience of using modern sophisticated analytical equipment in separation science and mass spectrometry. Students also undertake a placement on a research project with one of the programme’s industrial sponsors. This element of the programme is tailored for future employment.

Graduates of the programme go on to PhDs, laboratory-based research careers, and other science-related careers. King’s College London and industrial sponsor bursaries are available for this programme.

Analytical Toxicology MSc

The Analytical Toxicology MSc is designed for science graduates planning a career in the field, or for professionals looking to enhance their existing knowledge and experience; there is a growing need for staff working in healthcare and forensic science to be trained in analytical toxicology.

The programme, unique in the UK, has been developed in consultation with national and international experts. It integrates theoretical and practical aspects of analytical science with a view to tackling problems such as drug and substance abuse and chemical or drug poisoning. Students gain laboratory skills, as well as the theoretical basis for gaining competence in the practical aspects of analytical toxicology; specifically immunoassay, spectroscopy, chromatography and mass spectrometry. The programme contains a strong practical element, including a research project carried out in industry or within a King’s laboratory, including our Drug Control Centre.

Expected career paths include analytical and supervisory roles within government and private institutions.
