Specialists in the preservation, restoration and protection of historical sites, documents and artefacts.

Our experts in museum collections, historical documents, digital engineering, and archiving work on the protection of shared histories under threat, whether from political uncertainty, environmental damage or from the passage of time. 

Our academics have a long history working in the field of historical preservation of places and artefacts. More recently, owing to being the home of one of the first Digital Humanities departments in the world, our researchers are also engaged in world-leading digital archiving, discoveries and collections.

Discovery of an original Magna Carta

In 2024, Professor David Carpenter was searching the Harvard Law School archives and came across what he thought looked like a remarkable 'copy' of the Magna Carta.

After working with Harvard and the University of East Anglia, his suspicions were born to be true - what they discovered was, in fact, an original.

The history of King’s College London is multi-layered. Since its inception in 1828, King’s has been at the centre of networks of political, social, and economic power.

These connections now support King’s mission as an inclusive civic institution, acting for the service of society, but King’s history as an institution at the heart of worldwide imperial systems of power that inscribed racial, economic, and social hierarchies is an uncomfortable one, creating a challenging legacy, that cannot be ignored.
