The MA and PhD degrees in Film Studies at King's, both founded in 2001, are long established and highly regarded. They offer innovative opportunities to study cinema and media intensively and in-depth with some of the world's leading experts in the field.

Our students pursue an exciting variety of taught modules or research projects reflecting the Department's strengths in British, European, American and East Asian cinemas and media, and their cultural, socio-political, industrial, and philosophical analysis.

Our postgraduate degrees incorporate skills training in library, archival, and online research, written and oral argumentation and presentation, and audio-visual and textual analysis and interpretation. Opportunities for creative practice in digital video and sound are also available.

Our exceptional central London location puts our students within easy reach of a wealth of cinema and media experiences, including the BFI Southbank, the IMAX, and Tate Modern. We also benefit from the substantial physical and electronic resources of leading libraries, all within convenient walking distance, including the Maughan Library at King's, the University of London Library at Senate House, the British Library, and the BFI's Reuben Library, which is the leading cinema library in the UK and one of the best in the world. Through our partnership with The Courtauld Institute of Art, we offer a joint Master's in Contemporary Art and the Moving Image, exploring the history of visual culture and the moving image.

Our research events programmes are second to none. We host prestigious guest speakers from around the world in our annual King's@BFI Key Scholar lectures and our fortnightly Research Seminar series; we hold an annual MA and PhD Work-In-Progress conference, programmed by our students; and we regularly fund one-off workshops and symposia on specialist topics. All of this is in addition to the wide array of stimulating film, media, and research events on offer throughout London all year round.

Contemporary Art and the Moving Image MA

The Contemporary Art and the Moving Image MA provides an interdisciplinary context for the study of moving image and contemporary art, combining the expertise in film studies and critical theory in Arts and Humanities at King’s College London and the expertise in study of modern and contemporary art at the Courtauld Institute of Art.
