The Joint Research and Development (R&D) Office is a partnership between the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM).
We provide support to those looking to conduct research within the Trust, ensuring that projects meet all necessary ethical, contractual, and regulatory standards before they begin.
We are dedicated to helping deliver high-quality, ethically sound research by providing expert advice and practical guidance.

Accelerating Research Approvals - Funding Call

Want to help improve set up and approval systems for research within the IoPPN?
The Joint R&D Office and the Research Approval Process (RAP) group have teamed up to offer this funding opportunity, which aims to support the development and implementation of initiatives to streamline research approvals process and improve the experience of applying to the Joint R&D Office. We are particularly interested in supporting projects at a local level and receiving applications from individual, research groups, teams, student groups/networks, or departments.
The total funding available is approximately £10k, which we expect to allocate to multiple projects.
All projects must align with the objective of promoting streamlined research approvals via the Joint R&D Office of SLaM/IoPPN. Please note that applications do not need to fully resolve the issues they identify within the existing processes, but should instead seek to make incremental progress at a local and more achievable level. We are particularly interested in projects that will help us to meet our national targets for 150 day set up (60 days from HRA approval to C&C letter, or 30 days from “ready to recruit” to “first participant recruited”.
All applicants should show how they will work alongside the Joint R&D Office to meet their objectives. It is advisable to speak with a representative in the Joint R&D Office to ensure alignment with the office’s objectives and national requirements for research governance and approvals.
Projects should be 6-months in duration. In exceptional circumstances, the panel will consider projects of longer duration up to 12months.

Whether you’re about to start a study, have specific questions about your current project or just want to learn more about the Joint R&D Office, we are here to help. We recognise that some research processes can be complicated, and it might be easier to chat them through in person. All are welcome to drop-in and speak to a member of the team; there is no need to book. However if there is someone you’d specifically like to see, or you’d like support from one of our partners (Research Delivery Team in SLaM, KHP Clinical Trials Office or NIHR King’s CRF), then please email us in advance with the subject line ‘Wednesday walk-in’ to slam-ioppn.research@kcl.ac.uk
