Medical Education

At GKT School of Medical Education, we train the medical leaders of tomorrow. Our medicine curriculum is ground-breaking in design and fully integrated. Blending biomedical sciences, population sciences and clinical practice, it provides early authentic clinical experiences to truly bring medicine to life. King’s medical graduates will be distinguishable as critical scientific thinkers, champions for mental health and leaders in service quality improvement – equipped to address healthcare challenges on a local and global scale.

As a medical school responsible for training the next generation of doctors, it is our role to ensure that we constantly look ahead to the future and ensure we reinforce the required values and capabilities needed by outstanding doctors in rapidly changing health and social care environments.

While it is vital that medical graduates can recognise, assess and manage acutely unwell patients, they must also develop skills to help patients and the public manage their long-term conditions. This requires doctors, in partnership with patients, to manage risks across a range of different care settings.

These patient and population changes are at the heart of King’s medical curriculum. Our aim is to nurture students to become outstanding patient centred doctors who are distinguishable as:

  • critical scientific thinkers
  • champions for mental health
  • leaders in service quality improvements
  • equipped to transform healthcare on a local and global scale.

Which medicine course is right for me?

The Medicine programme at King’s has a number of entry routes. This reflects our active encouragement of diversity. In addition to the standard six-year programme, King’s offers a graduate fast-track programme and a specialist programme for dentists wishing to train as oral and maxillo-facial surgeons. King’s was the first university in the UK to offer a widening access to medicine degree. Whatever the entry route, all students follow the same curriculum.

Words from the Interim Dean - Professor Claire Sharpe

Recent global emergencies have bought into sharp focus the important role that doctors and other healthcare professionals play when communities are in crisis. GKT School of Medial Education is one of the largest centres for training new doctors in the UK and we are proud to produce a diverse and culturally competent body of dedicated professionals ready to serve society.

Working as a doctor is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding careers we can have. We enjoy privileged access to people’s lives and in return we use our skills to alleviate suffering and, where possible, effect a cure. Our patients invest enormous trust in us and so we must ensure we live up to the highest professional standards.

Medical school should be a transformative experience enabling you to develop the skills needed to make a difference to patient and population health. Our MBBS programme is designed to help you harness your intellect and personal experiences so as a member of a team you can work in partnership with patients to provide the best care. We are here to help you develop critical scientific thinking and excellent communication skills so you can push back the boundaries of knowledge and strive to improve patient outcomes. We are looking to you to be future leaders, continually improving the quality of patient care and inspiring others to do the same.
