Weddings and Wedding Blessings

We are delighted when members of the King's community wish to get married, or have their marriage blessed, in one of our beautiful chapels, either in the College Chapel on the Strand or the Guy's Chapel on the Guy's campus, and we will do everything that we can to make your day a special and memorable occasion.

WeddingWeddings in either of our Chapels are legally binding Church of England services. The College Chapel and Guy's Chapel are not parish churches and are, therefore, not licensed for marriages - to get married in either of our Chapels, a Special Marriage Licence is required.

When the marrying couple have confirmed their eligibility to get married in either of our Chapels (see below) and have agreed a date and time for the wedding with us, they are required to apply for the Special Marriage License through the Faculty Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and payment for the application must be paid to the Faculty Office directly. Weddings conducted in the Chapel can only take place once the Special Marriage License is obtained, and marriages are registered as per the regulations that apply at the time.

Wedding Blessings in either of our Chapels are non-legally binding, religious services (typically Church of England) that are offered to couples who have been legally married in a civil ceremony off-campus.

Eligibility

You can be married, or have your marriage blessed, in one of the College Chapels if a satisfactory connection with King's can be made. It is required that either one or both in the couple is a current member of King's College London (student or staff), or one or both in the couple has graduated from, or left employment at, King's not more than 5 years ago.

Fees

We are happy to provide information relating to fees for making use of either Chapel for the purpose of a Wedding or Wedding Blessing, and for booking an Organist or Singers for the ceremony through us - please contact us with your requirements via email: dean@kcl.ac.uk (College Chapel) or jim.craig@kcl.ac.uk (Guy's Chapel).

Note: We do not permit photography in wedding dress to be taken in the College Chapel if the couple weren't married, or had their marriage blessed, in the Chapel.

On Marriage Equality in the Church of England

We deeply regret that the Church of England does not currently conduct marriage ceremonies for same-sex couples. We would like to be able to celebrate all unions between couples in a spirit of inclusion and love which affirms rather than discriminates, and continue to work for this within the church.

We are bitterly sorry for the pain the church continues to cause to our LGBTQ siblings, and stand with you in your anger and distress.

Your Dean and Campus Chaplains affirm that:

  • God loves all people equally without regard for gender or sexual orientation

  • Same-sex love is holy love, and a gift from God

  • Marriage is a rite that should be available to all couples

Your Dean and Campus Chaplains commit to:

  • Welcoming same-sex couples to have their marriages blessed in the Strand Chapel and Guy’s Chapel

  • Campaigning for equal marriage within the Church of England

  • Living out a faith that sees God’s love as extravagantly inclusive

We are able to offer a service of blessing on your marriage in either of our two Chapels, and will do so with joy and in a way tailored to you so as to make your day as special and meaningful as possible. Please email us with your interest and requirements.

Also: Read the letter to the Bishops which adds the voices of the Dean and Campus Chaplains to the many who are urging the Church of England to move forward with marriage equality (October 2022).
