Chemistry outreach

We are passionate about creating a diverse and inclusive culture within our department.

With an equal gender split among undergraduates and over 70% of students from BME backgrounds, we represent the cultural diversity of central London whilst providing a stimulating learning environment. We collaboarte with local schools and form lasting relationships with students to support them on their academic journeys into higher education.

Our aim is to engage, inform and support students, particularly those unsure about pursuing science and those from non-traditional or socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. We do this through relevant, topical activities that build understanding of the world and highlight career pathways in science. We also offer free, curriculum-linked practical experience, personal statement workshops, and ongoing engagement with schools to ensure our support meets students’ needs.

Summer School

Our Widening Participation Discover Chemistry Summer School aims to encourage and support students from marginalised groups to come to King’s College London to study chemistry.

This free non-residential summer school includes lab and campus tours, lectures, and hands-on workshops, as well as providing lots of opportunities to ask any questions you might have about studying chemistry at university or being a student at King’s.

Daniell Lectures

Organised annually by the Department of Chemistry, the King’s Daniell Lectures are aimed at teachers and school students from the ages of 15 - 18 who are interested in studying Chemistry at university.

Speakers are chosen not only for their outstanding contribution to modern scientific knowledge, but also for their ability to communicate and engage young people and non-expert audiences in their research.

Lab tours

Our Open Access labs are an opportunity for schools and other education groups to bring groups of 40–60 students to the chemistry labs in the Franklin-Wilkins Building for a day.

Students perform experiments in undergraduate labs under the supervision of staff and students. We also have a research talk and Q&A with current students to find out more about what it is like studying chemistry at King’s.

Experimenting at home

These experiments are designed to make use of common kitchen equipment to safely recreate a version of the experiments that students would have experienced had they been able to attend our Open Access labs.
