Message from Professor Kim Piper

2019 has been a busy year for education as we have looked to enhance the student experience ensuring we fully develop the dental team.

Students are now engaged with creating their own action plans alongside their clinical mentors, as a move to delivering person centred oral health care. The redevelopment of floor 21 has allowed us to provide direct access to education from restorative and periodontology consultant clinics.

We have a new governance structure which enables students to way-find with more clarity and have an enhanced student support system with a network of personal and senior year tutors, as well as our director of student support.

Students are engaged with providing detailed feedback via the new Y1-2 and 3-5 student liaison committees as well as our inaugural staff student conference. This has been pivotal in helping us shape our new dental curriculum for 2020.

We have been delighted to pilot a new initiative with the King’s Cultural team for all our new year 1 students; “Thriving in Cultural London” as part of our increased Clinical Humanities and wellbeing program. Read more about that here.

We are also expanding the use of technology enhanced learning across the curriculum and will be developing a new e-portfolio for launch in 2020. The autumn of 2020 will see us launch the new BDS curriculum alongside the new Dental Therapy & Hygiene BSc, which will allow us for the first time to fully co-teach and develop the dental workforce of the future.

In parallel with vision 2029 King's also launched a new education strategy. Several members of the faculty are actively engaged in this work which has already seen the development of a new credit framework and degree classification algorithm and as well as a review of all current programmes as part of portfolio simplification.

Thank you to all those involved in education at the faculty.  I hope you have a relaxing festive break.
