Message from Professor Jenny Gallagher

As a world leading Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences we have contributed to, and embrace King’s new Internationalisation 2029 strategy.

Our shared vision is to demonstrate cultural competence, able to see the world through the lens of others and to have a global problem-solving mindset in support of making the world a better place.

International engagement
We are actively building strong networks and alliances of like-minded institutions around the world through our research and education. During the year we have had the pleasure of welcoming many visitors from dental schools across the world to our campuses. Staff and students at our faculty have engaged in international conferences and workshops, sharing research and education in support of understanding and tackling health challenges. In October of this year we were delighted to hold our third joint workshop with colleagues from Peking University in Beijing, strengthening our relationships and research.

Leadership skills
We were delighted to visit Harvard School of Dental Medicine in Boston in March 2019 to co-host the Senior Dental Leadership Programme (SDL-13) and we look forward to welcoming a new group of delegates to SDL-14 programme in London in March 2020.

Within King’s College London, we were pleased to have Birke Bogale from Ethiopia, who was undertaking an MSc in Dental Public Health, participate in the new Future Global Leaders Programme led by the Vice President & Vice Principal (International), Professor Funmi Olonisakin. Going forward we aim to identify postgraduate students from all backgrounds whom we will support to become future leaders with global problem-solving mindsets and a shared vision to make the world a better place. This King’s initiative will provide exciting opportunities for future students.

Elective exchanges
Opportunities for internationalisation abound, both here in London and abroad through student exchange. We welcome students from our partner institutions for their elective studies. Each year our dental students visit over 20 countries, ranging from working with Rohingya Refugees in Pakistan, providing oral hygiene advise to children in South Africa to learning Dental Public Health in Harvard University; taking the time to reflect and report on their experiences in varied contexts.

Students and Alumni
Each year we welcome international students from around the world, many of whom join us for masters and doctoral level, bringing their varied experiences to enrich our King’s community.  We value our links to all our alumni and particularly our growing international alumni. I look forward to meeting with many of you on my travels in the forthcoming year.
