Equality, Diversity & Inclusion in the Defence Studies Department

In the Defence Studies Department (DSD), we are committed to ensuring the very best student and staff experience where everyone can flourish in a culture of respect and support.

The Department seeks to foster a culture which recognises, respects and values differences and promotes an inclusive culture for all staff and students. DSD is committed to actively embedding equality, diversity and inclusion into its policies, practices and processes. We work closely with civilian and military colleagues at the Defence Academy, as well as with colleagues at King’s, to create an inclusive working and learning environment.

Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Committee

Our EDI Committee is made up of academic and professional services staff and military colleagues who meet once a term.

Some key initiatives and projects over the last two years include:

  • In collaboration with military partners, instituting a Defence Academy Active Bystander Programme for staff and students

  • Prompting the inclusion of more diverse and inclusive images in the Defence Academy

  • Working with the Defence Academy Inclusivity Network to organise EDI related events through the year

  • Ongoing work on diversifying the curriculum

  • Mental well-being survey and action plan for DSD staff
