About the School of Education, Communication & Society

Welcome to the School of Education, Communication & Society, where leading-edge research informs our teaching.

The School of Education, Communication & Society (ECS) has been at the forefront of teacher education and education research for over 40 years. Today we are renowned for our teaching and research expertise in science and mathematics education; language, culture and communication; and public policy.

We have a proud history of contributing to public policy debates and the concerns of professional communities of practice across multiple sectors, both nationally and internationally, and provide programmes of study that help professionals critically analyse, research and effectively respond to changes in thinking and policy in their fields. ECS is a warm and friendly school in which students are supported to become active participants in a dynamic community of learners.

Mission

Our mission is to work for the public good through research and teaching focused on education in its broadest sense - teaching and learning in formal and informal contexts; personal growth and development; and the enhancement of social, civic and professional capability and engagement.

This diverse agenda incorporates questions about culture, communication, cognition, authority, power, social justice and ethics in educational and other professional and social contexts, including, for example, health and social care and the cultural sector. Scholarship in the school is interdisciplinary; it is located within the humanities and social sciences and it draws upon a wide range of theoretical and disciplinary perspectives.
