Chronic pain and migraine

 

 

Chronic pain can make life unbearable and stop us doing normal everyday tasks. Usually, sensory nerve cells transmit information about harmful stimuli to the brain, which controls whether or not this feels painful. Dramatic changes to the sensory nerve cells and brain occur under constant pain states and we define such changes with the aim to identify new ways to combat chronic pain. 

Headache disorders are a group of extremely common, severe and disabling disorders that includes migraine and cluster headaches. We focus on the mechanisms and management of head pain, to understand brain regions involved in headache and how we can develop novel treatment strategies.

Our key questions:

  • How does our nervous system transmit and modulate pain?
  • Which nerve cells are responsible for pain sensing? Can this information be used to develop new, ground-breaking drugs?
  • What are the causal mechanisms underlying chronic pain?
  • How do immune cells contribute to chronic pain?
  • What are the brain regions involved in headaches and how do they connect?
