Social mobility and widening participation

At The Dickson Poon School of Law, we are committed to ensuring our outstanding teaching is accessible to students regardless of their background.

Diversity and inclusion are embedded across our teaching and research. Our student body represents more than 90 countries, bringing together perspectives from across the globe as well as a wide range of British backgrounds.

Our academic staff actively support widening participation through initiatives such as the Widening Participation Coordinators Programme (formerly the Borough Coordinators Programme). Through this programme, staff work with local schools to develop critical thinking skills, raise awareness of higher education, and inspire pupils to study law at university.

In the 2024–25 academic year, the team reached approximately 700 pupils across 33 schools in London and surrounding counties, prioritising schools with high numbers of students from underrepresented groups.

Our activities included:

  • Three large multi-school one-day Widening Participation campus events, including a Legal Insight Day in partnership with the Raheem Sterling Foundation, Black Solicitor’s Network, and the Junior Legal Fellowship Programme
  • Visits by staff members and students to local schools running 'School Tasking' (a multi-week award-nominated legal education programme in a local primary school)
  • Assisting with King’s flagship access programme, King's Plus

The Business and Law taster day was a great opportunity for our students to understand what it is really like to study the two disciplines at university. Though they go to school in inner London, many of them were unaware of the wealth of opportunity available at a world-leading university such as Kings not too far from their home. The day has boosted their aspirations.

Interview with Dr Michelle Johnson - Beyond education: Building belonging in Law

"Inclusive education practices are embedded in our everyday interactions within the School, and are not treated as an optional extra."

In this interview, we hear from Dr Michelle Johnson, who is a Senior Lecturer in Law (Education) at the Law School and is also the Faculty Inclusive Education Lead. A former widening participation student herself, she draws upon her experience to ensure students from all backgrounds can thrive.
