Departments & Institutes

The Faculty is made up of four departments – Adult Nursing, Child & Family Health, Mental Health Nursing, and Midwifery.

We’re also home to the Cicely Saunders Institute of Palliative Care, Policy & Rehabilitation. Working together, we train students, influence policy and improve care globally.

Each department within the Faculty plays their part unravelling clinical challenges and making an impact – whether that’s improving services for dementia, launching undergraduate programmes abroad, or using art to express the challenges of childbirth.

You can explore these pages to find out about our latest research, discover how we give students practical experience and meet the experts behind our breakthroughs.

Our Departments & Institutes

Adult Nursing

From tissue viability to patient experience, the Department of Adult Nursing explores a range of areas – and their research is recognised internationally. The team of around 100 staff share their diverse experience with students to help them prepare for practice.

Child & Family Health

The team prepares students to care for children and make a positive impact on their families in a range of settings. Through their research, they are transforming our understanding in genetics, maternity and infant health, adolescent mental health and more.

Cicely Saunders Institute

Palliative care aims to provide the best possible quality of life for patients and their families. The Institute is the first purpose-built hub for research in this area. It gives experts the chance to find care solutions, as well as providing education, patient information and support.

Mental Health Nursing

The way people understand the relationship between the body and brain needs to change. The Department of Mental Health Nursing is training students to banish stigma and break down barriers. At the same time, our experts are researching a range of areas, from policy to managing self-harm.

Midwifery

The Department of Midwifery is uncovering new ways to boost the understanding of childbirth, help charities to provide advice and push the boundaries in research. With hands-on teaching, they help students experience the day-to-day challenges of the delivery room.
