At the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care, we believe that equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) are essential to progress – for individuals, for the Faculty and for the wider healthcare community.
EDI means creating a culture where everyone feels valued, respected and able to thrive, regardless of background, identity or experience. It is about removing barriers, amplifying underrepresented voices and working together to build a more equitable future.
In the spirit of Florence Nightingale’s words, we recognise that EDI is not a destination but a continual, collaborative effort. We are committed to embedding it into every part of our work – from education and research to leadership and community engagement.
Our commitment in action
There are many ways we work to promote an inclusive environment within the faculty, some of the ways we promote and measure EDI include:
- ensuring our students feel respected and valued in our learning environment through effective communication and engagement
- providing personal tutors and tailored student support to students
- ensuring accessible spaces and virtual meeting options
- aligning online platforms with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines
- embedding EDI-focused language in teaching and practice learning
- offering digitised reading lists and recorded lectures
- using microphones in teaching spaces where available
- developing Personalised Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs)
- providing reasonable adjustments to placement plans for students with specific learning difficulties (SLD) or with physical or mental health conditions
- providing grants, bursaries and scholarships
- encouraging active bystander training alongside mandatory EDI training and workshops.
We also measure our progress through initiatives like the Athena SWAN Charter.
Driving change
We are proud to hold an Athena SWAN Silver Award and Race Equality Charter Bronze Award. Our Inclusive Education Staff Partners, Shelley McLetchie-Holder and Modupe Oshadiya, work closely with our leadership team to drive change.
We are committed to supporting NHS England’s EDI priorities. We align our teaching, research and student support with NHS frameworks to promote fairness, inclusivity and accessibility in healthcare.
As a world-leading faculty in nursing, midwifery and palliative care, our work also extends beyond the UK. We engage in international collaborations and research partnerships that strive to improve healthcare equity worldwide. By fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment, we aim to create a lasting global impact on health and care systems.

Widening participation
We offer a wide range of support for students from widening participation backgrounds, including our faculty's K Plus Programme. Through this programme, we support sixth form and college students from underrepresented backgrounds by helping them prepare for university through academic taster sessions, study support, career guidance and tailored application advice.
For enquiries or suggestions, contact our Faculty Lead for Widening Participation, Kevin Fernandez-Mills: kevin.c.fernandez-mills@kcl.ac.uk.
