UK ROC : UK Rehabilitation Outcomes Collaborative

What is UK ROC?

The UK specialist Rehabilitation Outcomes Collaborative (UK ROC) was set up through a Department of Health NIHR Programme Grant to develop a national database for collating case episodes for inpatient rehabilitation.

During the first 5 years it focused on neurorehabilitation and ultimately included data from all specialist Level 1 and 2 neurorehabilitation services, across the UK.

The database development was undertaken in collaboration with the British Society of Rehabilitation Medicine (BSRM) and the Australasian Rehabilitation Outcome Centre (AROC) which is now 10 years into a similar programme.

  • A Payment by Results (PbR) Improvement Project which provided information on casemix and episode costs to inform the development of complexity-weighted tariffs by 2012.
  • It served to 'open the black box of rehabilitation' by providing information on rehabilitation requirements, the inputs provided to meet them, outcomes and cost-benefits of rehabilitation for patients with different levels of need.

The UK project started in September 2008. It has been led by Professor Turner-Stokes, and is housed at Northwick Park Hospital in London and formed part of the Department of Palliative Care, Policy and Rehabilitation's clinical research strategy.

The development of UK ROC and underpinning research was funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) under its Programme Grants for Applied Research Programme (RP-PG-0407-10185).

The final report was completed and submitted to the NIHR 2015. The views expressed in this report are those of the authors and not necessarily those of the NHS, the NIHR or the Department of Health. Although still pending review by the NIHR team, the submitted report may be read on the links below.
