Module description

This module is designed to introduce students to core analytical concepts in network theory and their applications to data analysis with special focus on topics in political economy and development economics. 

Assessment details

10 Minute Presentation (10%) & 4,000-word essay (90%).

Educational aims & objectives

This module aims to:

  • Provide a broad overview of analytical tools such as basic linear algebra and matrix manipulation to analyse the pervasive role of networks in economics, with special focus on issues in political economy and development economics.
  • Develop an understanding of how data can be interpreted through the lens of network theory and acquire basic programming skills (Python) to implement such data analysis.
  • Provide guidance in the process of identifying original research questions and help to develop them into early-stage research projects.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:

  • Understand core analytical concepts in network theory.
  • Apply such concepts to data analysis via basic programming skills.
  • Formulate original research

The module should allow students to further develop the following employability and transferable skills

• problem-solving skills

• oral communicative skills

• critical and creative thinking

• team-working skills question and take first steps in addressing such question scientifically.
