Module description

Population ageing will be one of the major demographic changes affecting social institutions throughout the world in the 21st century. The module will provide you with a greater understanding and awareness of population ageing and its diverse implications from a global perspective. We will explore a range of demographic processes across the world to understand the implications for both individuals and societies. Finally, it will provide you with an introduction to the policy implications of population ageing (e.g., pensions, health care systems).

  • Develop an understanding of population ageing and its diverse implications from a global perspective.
  • Explore a range of demographic processes across the world and to understand the implications for both individuals and societies
  • Develop an understanding of ageing issues in countries outside the United States and Europe

Learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate knowledge of demographic processes and how these vary across the world.
  • Understand key issues in ageing and health from a global perspective with a focus on chronic conditions and disability at older ages and different models of healthcare provision.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of how long-term care is provided for older adults with chronic health conditions in different countries around the world.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of population ageing and its effects on older people, family support systems, living arrangements and intergenerational relationships.
  • Understand the key social, political and economic implications of changing demographic processes for contemporary societies.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of global institutions and their impact on the lives of older people.

Teaching pattern

One weekly two-hour class, split into lecture and seminar/discussion.
