Module description

This module explores a selected topic in art music of the 20th-21st-centuries, examining a central movement, theme, composer or other musical figure and the social and aesthetic issues with which they engaged.

 

Assessment details

  • 2,500-word essay (60%)
  • Take-away exam (40%)

Educational aims & objectives

To provide a sophisticated understanding of central issues in art music of the 20th-21st centuries, in relation to social, political and artistic changes in the period.

 

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, the student will be able to demonstrate intellectual, transferable and practical skills appropriate to a Level 6 module and in particular will be able to demonstrate:

  • a sophisticated understanding of a set of complex musical works
  • critical understanding of social, aesthetic, and political forces shaping art music of the 20th-21stcenturies
  • the ability to conduct independent research in the area of 20th-21st-century music
