Module description

Aims

This module will introduce students to professional issues of Biomedical Engineering – as internal specialisation, medical equipment design, ethics issues, guiding and communicating research

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course the students should be able to:
• demonstrate awareness of the Biomedical Engineering and Medical Physics sub-specialities
• understand the framework of medical equipment design
• apply basic methods of project management
• demonstrate awareness of ethical issues in the profession
• use information resources to underpin research

The syllabus of the modules includes lectures and labs on:
• Introduction to Biomedical Engineering history, development and practice
• Internal Specialisations of Medical Engineering and Medical Physics
• Introduction to Medical Equipment design
• Intellectual Property
• Introduction to Medical Equipment management
• Introduction to Project management
• Team work
• Professional Ethics
• Ethical framework for human and animal research
• Use of scientific databases (ISS seminar)
• Referencing (ISS seminar)
• Communicating Research
• Field learning 8 hours (visit of Medical Physics and Clinical Eng Departments)
