This module will provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to ensure that they are able to understand, evaluate, and apply the various approaches to preserving digital materials. The students will explore the theory informing preservation policies and examine a variety of preservation methods and models. The module includes an overview of the current state of the art in the field. Students will examine a number of case studies and real life example of preservation practices and challenges which are representative of the current application of preservation methods to a variety of data types, including texts, images, sounds and multi-media . Students will develop critical skills for assessing the relevance of different approaches to digital preservation in different contexts through the application of analytical, interpretive and communication skills.
Coursework:
10 x 1 hour lecture, 10 x 1 hour seminar
