Module description

This module follows on from Composition 1 in providing students with a deeper knowledge of the technical skills required to compose music in a 20th-century or contemporary style. Lectures will again focus on a reconsideration of familiar musical ideas, concentrating on subjects such as rhythm and ensemble writing, and will examine the expanded technical and aesthetic possibilities developed by composers since 1900.Students will submit a portfolio of two extended compositions; the portfolio will typically consist of a piece for four or five instruments of the student's choice and a choral piece. Students also write a third piece for a four week-long takeaway exam at the end of the year. While there are no fixed stylistic requirements, students are expected to acquaint themselves with a variety of 20th- and 21st-century music and to assimilate musical developments of the last 100 years into their own compositional voice.
