This module re - evaluates Mozart's life and career in Vienna, from 1781 to 1791. It begins with the traditional narrative - a narrative of self - assertion and early success, followed by dismal failure - but then goes on to reconsider whether this narrative is supported by the historical record and how it is that such a narrative came about, as well the implications of an historical reevaluation for how we analyse and understand Mozart's music. Topics to be covered include Mozart's biography, Viennese musical institutions, the major genres in which he composed, the relationship among work, source and analysis, and reception.
