Module description

Theory is a crucial element of social science but it is also an element that can be experienced as off-putting or confusing, or as inherently distant from 'practice'. This module, building on the Introduction to Social Theory module in Year 1, aims to create opportunities for course members to further develop their literacy and confidence in relation to theoretical ideas. It encourages students to ask fundamental questions about the different kinds of contribution that theory makes to social science research and writing. It helps provide lenses and tools for them to be able to identify and elucidate the way contrasting kinds of theory are used both in the context of academic writing and in non-academic settings. Students will work individually and in groups on these questions, both by engaging closely with academic papers and by focusing on policy/practice questions, and the module is designed to provide a supportive framework to underpin their success.

Assessment details

  • Group presentation, 15-20 minutes per group (10% of final grade)
  • 2500 word structured essay organised around a single academic paper (90% of final grade)
