Catalan Culture from Antoni Gaudí to the present day

Module description

In this module we will focus on the main features of cultural nationalisms that characterise stateless nations, and see how these features help us to better explain Catalan culture, especially from the 19th century Catalan Renaixença up until the present day (e.g. Antoni Gaudí, Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí, rap and indie pop music from Valencia and the Balearic Islands).

Assessment details

One 2000 word tutorial essay (40%); one 2-hour examination (60%)

Educational aims & objectives

To understand Catalan Culture through the analysis of its most iconic architecture, art, music and literature produced between the 19th century and the present day. To enhance students' Spanish linguistic skills and cultural awareness acquired during their Year Abroad.

Learning outcomes

Analyse and explain the module's academic framework based on the cultural foundations of nations, and related to the historical background of the Catalan-speaking regions.
