This module, which makes use of London's unrivaled manuscript holdings in libraries and archives, introduces students to the study of the production of Old and Middle English literary works in their manuscript contexts. Students will learn the basics of codicology (the study and description of manuscripts as material objects), palaeography (handwriting and scripts), and principles of handling manuscripts, as well as broader issues such as the principles of critical editing, the role of manuscripts in literary analysis, scribal identification, and the politics of manuscript survival. The module offers a rare combination of practical and theoretical approaches to medieval vernacular English literature.
