Module description

This module aims to give students an understanding of key concepts and analytical tools of contemporary political economy, including rational choice and institutional analysis. The module helps students understand the positive and perverse workings of political institutions, including voting systems, party competition, legislative bargaining, decentralization, and bureaucracies with specific examples from Africa, Latin America and OECD countries. It also aims to give students a practical understanding of formal and informal cooperation dynamics, through practical challenges aim at solving voting games, agenda setting, collective action problems, delegation dilemmas and enforcement. The module will help students understand how these institutional dilemmas directly affect the workings of democracy, the policy making process and the nature of policy outcomes.
