Module Description

This module introduces students to astrophysical and cosmological concepts. Planets, stars and galaxies will be covered in the module together with the tools that astronomers, astrophysicists and cosmologists use to explore them.

Learning aims & outcomes

The aim of the module is to introduce students to basic concepts in Astrophysics.

At the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • Describe and define the Sun and the solar system, stellar types and the HR diagram, stellar nuclear cycles, absolute and apparent magnitudes, The Milky Way, galactic morphology, basic spectroscopy, telescopes, cosmology
  • Calculate distances and other astronomical quantities

Written exam (2 hours) May/June 90%

Regular problem sheets 10%
