Module description

This module will introduce the concept of Practical Theology, the dominant theoretical frameworks of discussion, and the major contributors to the discipline. It will provide theological foundations for engaging with core issues that are integral to Christian ministry, establishing a framework for integrating theory and practice in ministry. Particular focuses of the module will be to:
• Introduce the major biblical resources for discussion of ministry, reflecting on today's contexts and asking whether and how the Bible might inform contemporary practice
• Examine the distinctive nature of Christian ministry, considering also how the language of ‘priesthood’, ‘pastorship’ and alternative discourses is used
• Look at some of the many issues that arise in the area of sex and sexuality in relation to ministry
• Explore conceptions of monarchy and other modes of political authority as they relate to the churches, both historically and especially in the present day
• Confront the implications of a radically multicultural context for Christian ministry and ask what Christian ministers can and should learn from other religious traditions
• Explore selected issues of social justice, national and international, and assess the role of the Christian minister in engaging with them
• Consider selected ecological and other challenges facing the world and reflect on possible directions for Christian ministry in the future
