Module description
‘Power, inequality and social change’ explores key intersecting dimensions of inequality – particularly class, race/ethnicity, sex/gender, sexuality, disability - in detail, with a focus on power relationships and social change, and drawing on theory, research and examples from experience. Together we will investigate how inequality and power plays out at different levels - individual; interpersonal / social; institutional; international – and hear from visiting speakers involved in a variety of activist and community-based approaches to challenging inequalities and changing society and institutions.
The aim is for all of us to engage individually and collectively in deep reflection on attitudes, experiences and privileges, and to develop skills and confidence in thinking and speaking about, and researching these issues. You will develop your ability to engage in challenging conversations; to reflect on your own experiences, privileges and attitudes; to listen to people with different backgrounds and experiences; to write critically and reflectively; and to understand key dimensions of inequality, the role of power in social relations, and different approaches to social change. Come to this module ready to challenge and be challenged, to listen and to contribute, and – hopefully - to be inspired to contribute to challenging inequalities in everyday life and beyond.
