Module description

This module introduces the basic components used in electronic circuits, and teaches the respective characteristics and equivalent circuits. The module elaborates on simple models of amplifier circuits; semiconductors and junction diodes; Ideal and non-ideal models of diodes; Diode applications; Ideal operational amplifiers; Op Amp circuits; bipolar transistors: biasing circuits, linear small signal equivalent models; Field effect transistors: biasing circuits, linear small signal equivalent models.

Educational aims & objectives

To introduce the basic components used in electronic circuits, their characteristics and equivalent circuits, and to teach the design of amplifier circuits using these components.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this module the student should:

Understand the electrical conduction processes in semiconductors.

Have familiarity with ideal and non-ideal characteristics of semiconductor diodes.

Be able to analyse and design diode circuits.

Be familiar with operational amplifier circuits and the basic concept of feedback.

Understand conduction process in bipolar and field effect transistors.

Have familiarity with different biasing processes in transistor circuits.

Be able to analyse and design simple circuits using bipolar and field effect transistors.

Be familiar with the computer aided analysis and design of semiconductor circuits.
