The educational aims of this module are to introduce students to the study of contemporary health issues and health policy, exploring topics of particular relevance to populations in emerging economies.

We will engage with key relevant debates and issues within the social science, development studies and public health disciplines including: theories about public health and development; approaches to understanding contemporary global health governance and global health diplomacy, and theories of health systems and of the role of state and market in health and healthcare.

We will use these lenses to consider seven key challenges for collective health and wellbeing in emerging economies: road traffic safety, the rise of ‘lifestyle’ non-communicable disease, rapid urbanisation; employment and work conditions; dynamics of poverty, inequality and ill-health; gender inequalities; mobilities in the global healthcare economy.
