Module description

N.B. Music majors only. Students should consult tutor before enrolling

Research seminar studying current debates in musicology. This seminar sets out to survey the field of musicology, understood in its widest sense. For the most part, it will concentrate on the musicological literature of the last decade or two, segmented according to methodologies and approaches. The module has two basic aims. The first is epistemological - to consider what the study of music should do and be. The second is to ensure familiarity both with a wide range of material and with major developments in the discipline since the late twentieth century. Much of the material may not seem of specific relevance to students' current research interests, but it will provide a useful background and foundation for further musicological study of any topic. Alongside the course's central concern with historiography (how music history has been and might be written), topics may include, but are not restricted to: politics, technologies, networks, theories of voice and body, gender and sexuality, and ecomusicology (weekly topics will differ from year to year).
