Module description

Contemporary world cinema has witnessed a transformation in its mediascape with significant changes in the production, distribution, and exhibition of commercially viable films across various national cinemas. This module explores not only various national cinemas-from European art cinemas to Argentine, Iranian, Nigerian, South Korean, and Taiwanese cinemas-but also alternative modes of film-making such as animated documentary and American independent cinema. This module examines how these other cinemas have responded to and competed against New Hollywood with distinctive political aims and aesthetic strategies.
