Module description

This module looks at some of the fundamental questions about language. Where did it come from? How did it change the evolution of our species? How different is it from communication systems used by other species? What makes it significant in human, but only human, evolution?

This module will give you an understanding of the sources and early development of human language, and its role in creating and sustaining human culture. It is interdisciplinary, and addresses the main principles of anthropology as well as linguistics.

(If you are unable to accept modern Darwinian evolutionary theory then this module is not suitable for you).
