Module description

Klingon, Dothraki, Elvish, Na'avi, Pravic … constructed languages have become more than just a hobby, linguists are being paid to make fictional languages come to life. Esperanto, Volapük, Lojban … and constructed universal languages continue to grow as if they were natural languages.

This module introduces you to the world of language construction, showing you when, where and why people create languages; and giving you the what and how for creating your own languages.

The module treats grammar and lexis as resources and tools, so it offers the opportunity to understand the structures and processes of language in a new way

Assessment details

Either

  • 3,000 word ethnographic description of created language (70%)
  • 1,000 word translation of standard text into created language (30%)

Or

  • 4,000 word essay (100%)
