Module description

Part I of the module deals with the concept of cellular systems such as frequency reuse and sectorization and the basic design of analogue cellular systems. Part II which is larger and more emphasised is concerned with system and application aspects of 2G to 5G networks including all technical aspects of network elements (user equipment, radio access network and core network). The module also explains protocol stacks with their functions used at various interfaces in an end-to-end scenario for 2G to 5G networks. The dimensioning, planning and optimisation procedures are also described.

Educational aims & objectives

The aim of this module is to provide the students with a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of all technical aspects, operations, and applications of second generation, third generation, fourth generation and fifth generation cellular mobile systems. The module is also intended to give students a deep knowledge and understanding of all technical aspects of digital communications, end-to end network elements (user equipment, radio access network and core network), protocols and interfaces in 2G,3G, 4G and 5G cellular systems and their incremental progressions in capabilities over time.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module a student should be able to...

1. understand basic elements of a mobile network and its operation.

2. have familiarity with second generation system as a case study.

3. understand the techniques and mechanisms used in 3G, 4G and 5G.

4. dimension, plan and optimise cellular networks

5. estimate capacity and coverage of cellular mobile networks.

6. have an awareness of services, user cases and application.
