Module description

This module deals with intellectual developments in the contemporary Muslim world, understood as the second half of twentieth century up to the present day. It explores how Muslim thinkers have addressed the intellectual inheritance of Islam, including epistemology (philosophy of knowledge), the Qur'an, and Muslim legal and political thought (eg. secularity, sovereignty, and violence). The module also explores how Muslims have approached contemporary questions about gender, sexuality, race and the legacy of slavery, as well as ecology and post-humanism.

Educational aims & objectives

A survey of developments in intellectual life throughout the modern Muslim world in order to come to an understanding of Muslim thought from the latter part of the 20th century onwards, through a combination of lectures, readings, and classroom discussions.

Teaching pattern

Two-hour weekly classes over ten weeks.
