Module description

The focus will be on ethics and on theories of the self. We will examine three movements in particulars: an ethics of authenticity (Heidegger, Sartre), an ethics of power (Foucault), and an ethics of alterity (Levinas). We will study extracts from the following primary texts: Sartre’s Being and Nothingness, Heidegger’s Being and Time, Foucault’s History of Sexuality and Discipline and Punish, and Levinas’ Totality and Infinity. All texts will be studied in translation.
