Module description

This module offers students the opportunity to explore key questions in the philosophy of religion from a range of traditions. Through close reading of important historical and contemporary texts, the module will tackle the big questions in metaphysics, epistemology and ethics. The topics covered will be subject to change, but examples include: what is religion, the concept of and existence of God, doctrine, theism, knowledge, good and evil, free will, religion and science, religious experience (including mysticism), and the relationship of religion and morality.

Educational aims & objectives

This module aims to offer students in-depth exploration of key questions in the philosophy of religion in one or more major traditions. Students will acquire the capacity to discuss topics philosophically, comparatively and critically through engagement with historical and contemporary texts.

  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of key questions in the philosophy of religion
  • Develop methods of close textual reading, interpretation and analysis
  • Synthesise a range of philosophical material in an original manner in response to a given question
  • Present well-researched arguments coherently in assessment
  • Engage effectively in discussion and debate in a professional manner, and produce coherent presentations of ideas and arguments in oral and written form.
  • Interact effectively with other students by contributing to class discussions, and by supporting other students in listening and responding to their contributions
  • Use the library and electronic resources to develop research skills and the independent acquisition of knowledge

Module Specific Skills:

  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of key questions in the philosophy of religion
  • Investigate metaphysics and epistemology from a range of philosophical perspectives
  • Develop philosophical competency in discussing religious ethics and values in culturally, historically and regionally diverse contexts
  • Demonstrate the capacity to effectively analyse primary texts to support argumentation and critical thinking
  • Develop an ability to reflect on the nature of philosophical method, its relationship to theology and/or religion, and its use in the study of religion

Teaching pattern

A one hour weekly lecture and a one hour weekly seminar over ten weeks.
