Module description

This module will enable students to become familiar with early Christian literature, from the Gospels of the New Testament to lesser known texts outside of the biblical canon. Attention will be paid to a range of different approaches and understandings in the study of early Christian literature in the context of the ancient Mediterranean world, providing a critical awareness of ground-breaking work over the past century, with particular emphasis on current issues such as coloniality and material culture. The educational environment will stimulate discussion, thought and learning.

Educational aims & objectives

The module aims are:

  • To provide a deep and specialised knowledge of early Christian literature, both canonical and non-canonical, in translation.
  • To promote deeper reflection on exegetical issues for students with or without linguistic competence.
  • To gain a sound appreciation of the scholarship on early Christian literature and familiarity with issues (of interpretation, dating, authorship, themes, context and theology) that have been at the forefront of academic debate over the past century.
  • To promote original and creative analysis of key issues in the study of early Christian literature.
  • To educate students in using critical methodologies and tools.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this module, students will have gained skills appropriate to a level 7 course of study, in particular:

  • A deep and specialised knowledge of early Christian literature, both canonical and non-canonical, in translation.
  • A familiarity with exegetical issues.
  • A sound appreciation of the scholarship on early Christian literature and familiarity with issues of interpretation, dating, authorship, themes, context and theology.
  • Confidence in speaking and writing at Masters level, using original and creative analysis of key issues in the study of early Christian literature.
  • Awareness and competence in using critical methodologies and tools.

Teaching pattern

One two-hour class weekly over 10 weeks.
