Module description

To use a problem-based learning approach to develop the core practical and intellectual skills required of a modern engineer. To instill a broad vision of the role of the engineer in society, and understand the desired impact. To develop cutting-edge entrepreneurial skills, and understand the role of innovation.

The module is aimed at helping the engineering student to develop strong personal, leadership and entrepreneurship skills. The first series of lectures relate to developing 21st century personal and working skills. The second series of lectures develops communications skills, including writing, marketing and media expertise. The lecture series is concluded with the development of strong engineering and entrepreneurship skills. Team/Group work skills are developed with groups operating under a (student) manager who has responsibility for organising meetings, setting deadlines, customer meetings and interacting with the module coordinator. Listening and engagement skills are developed by attending external seminars organized within or outside the premises of King's.

At the end of the module students should have developed and improved the following skills and abilities:

Personal Skills: effective presentation, communications and listening skills, focus, leadership

Adaptability and Communication Skills: Adapts interpersonal and communication skills to a range of situations, audiences and degrees of complexity.

Research: Undertakes research to provide new information and/or explores new or existing data to identify patterns and relationships.

Team-Working Skills: meetings, task sharing, peer review, feedback/criticism

Working Skills: timekeeping, online/offline efficiency tools, outsourcing, art of saying no. Writing Skills: report writing, emailing, notetaking, summarising

Marketing Skills: social and professional online platforms, marketing, branding

Addressing Media: functioning of TV, printed and online news; media awareness

Creating Impact: understanding pain points; creating win-win situations

Engineering Skills: problem solving, trouble shooting, making

Entrepreneurship: idea, team, business plan, capital, legal, growth, sales, exit strategies

Collects and synthesises information to inform a choice of solutions to Engineering problems in unfamiliar contexts.

Have learnt the electronic engineering lab code of ethics.
