Module description

This module will introduce students to a wide range of spaces and places where music is encountered and used throughout cultures and societies across the globe. It will engage with changing ideas and concepts about the role of music in society, in different cultural contexts.

Educational aims & objectives

This module aims to: 

 

  • Introduce students to key histories, theories and concepts, and their critical application to music, culture, and society;

  • Examine the major debates on the nature and impact of music on culture and society;

  • Explore the underlying processes and impacts of music through the application of theories and key concepts;

  • Enable students to develop the practice of academic argument, reasoning and discussion.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to demonstrate their ability to: 

 

  • Understand key music histories, theories, and concepts

  • Understand a range of substantive debates on the nature and impact of music in society and culture;

  • Apply a set of theories and methods to examine the underlying processes and impacts of the music;

  • Articulate informed understandings of the role of music in society in both verbal and written form.
